Chamonix Valley map
A narrow valley, 15 miles long and 0.5 mile wide, surrounded by pine forests, steep mountains and white glaciers. The 6 different cable cars are in red. These open in summer (from mid-June) and again for winter skiing.
There are 7 main villages in this alpine valley and a total populat ion of about 8,000 residents.
Vallorcine The "Valley of the Bears" at 1300m, on the pass leading to Martigny in Switzerland.
Le Tour At the head of the Chamonix valley at 1450m.
Monroc On the side-road to Le Tour.
A small hamlet and a railway station for the local train service.
Argentiere At 1250m, a popular base for Grands Montets skiers in winter and for campers in summer.
Les Praz The village at the foot of the Flegere cable car at 1060m.
Chamonix The main town at 1050m.
Les Houches at 950m.
Servoz at 800m.
